An Oldie but a goodie....(Anna in the Tropics)

Being some what of a romantic myself I always find myself being attracted to romantic themes. I am referring to romanticism as a genre of literature of course. And in Anna In the Tropics I am referring to the duality of humanity vs machines. This play is brilliant in its simplicity. The workers have a long history of tradition which they regard with pride. They take pride in their work and ensure that each cigar is rolled perfectly by hand. Yet, Chester wants to bring in a machine to increase production and also make the use of a lecteur pointless. As the machines would drown out the readings of the stories, but not the pain in his heart. Other examples of this play on nature as a representation of the organic and natural part of the human condition and industry as the corruption and need to dominate that exists in all men can be found throughout the play. A prime example is when Juan Julian is discussing how he feels suffocated in the city and it is only when he is out in the country that he feels free.
