The imagery evoked in this poem is just fantastic. Forche really brings you into the scene, describing anything and everything. "There were daily papers, pet dogs, a pistol on the cushion beside him." There is a cop show on TV, it's as if you are viewing these images through the eyes of someone walking the world Forche has created. And a pistol on the cushion? You start to wonder what type of man this is.
"The moon swung bare on its black cord over the house." This is one of my favorite lines in the poem. It starts to set the dark tone for the rest of the piece. The two contrasting images, the bright moon and it's black cord. She is seemingly showing us a "normal" family, and then turning that ideal upside down.
Bottles embedded into the wall to scoop kneecaps. You can visualize the necessary shape for a broken bottle to scoop someones kneecaps. Haunting.
And then to end the poem with a grocery bag full of ears, spilling all over the place, looking like dried peaches. Just really sinister.

i really like how you dissected (har..har..) this piece, the scooping of kneecaps and the gun on the cushion were very haunting for me as well.
ReplyDeleteNot to tear you down, but to encourage you to go further, why are the images in this poem "Haunting" and "sinister"? I would really like to know why you feel this way.
