The Colonel

For such a mundane daily task of eatting dinner C. Forche makes it so fasicnating. The images she draws are epic, "the moon swung bare on its black cord over the house". Did the colonel do his ear gathering at night? The description of "broken bottles" made me want to stand room center. "My friend said to me with his eyes: say nothing", that look that we are all familiar with. The one our parents may have shot us many times growing up. The drawing of the ears took me to a movie on Vietnam though I can't remember its exact name. Then when one is dropped in the water and it came alive like the pills you drop in and an animal slowly grows. I would love to go over to the colonel's house for dinner. WOW!

  1. I liked your personal relation to each image you mentioned, especially the ear being like the tiny animals that would get bigger in water. In this piece the images are so strong and clear, they almost can't help to send your mind to thoughts of other images or memories. Though I have to say I disagree with you on that last part, I'd much rather read the Forche's interpretation of the Colonel's house than really go there for dinner! :)

  2. That line - "the moon swung bare on its black cord over the house" - really stuck out to me too. Just fabulous imagery. I could literally visualize everything Force presented. I enjoyed your personal relation too.

  3. i think there is something in this story that makes me also think of a place like vietnam, or another far off mysterious dangerous place. i think writing is at it's best when you can say "I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN!" even though you have never been in a place like it before. i'm not sure i'd like to spend dinner with the colonel, but there was something about this story that felt eerily familiar.

  4. I can feel how much this piece affected you. I can feel all the emotions and thoughts that went through your head as your read. I am envious. I commend you for it.
